Alliance for MRI (23.juuli 2007.a.)

Dear Dr. Ross,

As you will be aware, the European Society of Radiology launched the ‘Alliance for MRI’, together with Dr. Swoboda, member of the European Parliament, and Vice-Chair of the Party of European Socialists and the European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA) on the occasion of ECR 2007 this March.

The ‘Alliance for MRI’ is a coalition of European Parliamentarians, patient groups, leading European scientists and the medical community, who together are seeking to avert the serious threat posed by EU health and safety legislation to the clinical and research use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

The Alliance for MRI requests that, as a matter of urgency, the European Commission propose an amendment to the legislation in order to ensure legal certainty for the continued use of MRI. The Alliance for MRI requests an EU-wide derogation for MRI.

Since the Alliance for MRI will now increasingly focus its lobbying activities on the member state level, we would like to invite your national radiological society to join the Alliance.

Given that this legislation will impact significantly on the work of radiologists, the European Society of Radiology would very much welcome your engagement on the issue. In the first instance, it would be helpful if you could support the Alliance for MRI. (As a supporter of the Alliance, the name of your organisation will be listed on the Alliance for MRI website (www.allianceformri.org) as well as in its publications.)

More importantly, however, we would very much value any support you can lend to our campaign. We are seeking to replicate the campaign we have launched at European level with activities at national level. If you have the time and resources to assist, we would welcome your engagement on the issue. We are looking for the threat to MRI to be raised with any contacts you have within the Ministries of Health and Research, as well as with Parliamentarians. In addition, if you have contacts to MEPs, writing a letter to them would also be helpful, asking them to join the Alliance. The Alliance secretariat may also be in a position to put you in touch with local patient groups with whom you can join forces.

Attached you will find for your information the position paper of the Alliance for MRI as well as the Alliance statement on the Crozier study.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions or require further information.

We look forward to your reply and very much hope that you will join the Alliance.

With best regards,
